WHAT WE BELIEVE

Athens Christian Reformed Church is part of the Christian Reformed Church of North America. As such there are some fundamental beliefs that we profess, together with the rest of our denomination. Those beliefs can be summarized in the words of the ancient creed which many Christians throughout the world call “The Apostle’s Creed.”

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

We also believe and share with other Christians throughout the world fundamental principals about God, His creation, and our place within it. We believe that the Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God, the only infallible rule for faith and life. We af?rm three creeds—the Apostles’ Creed (see above), the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed—as ecumenical expressions of the Christian faith. We also affirm three confessions—the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort—as historic Reformed expressions of the Christian faith, whose doctrines fully agree with the Word of God.

Along with these historic creeds and confessions, we recognize the witness of Our World Belongs to God: A Contemporary Testimony, adopted by synod as a current Reformed expression of the Christian faith, and the Belhar Confession, adopted by synod as an ecumenical faith declaration.
